Miriam Makeba was a South African singer, songwriter, actress and civil rights activist, also known as Mama Africa. She appeared as herself in the documentary *When We Were Kings* (1996) and played Angelina in the film *Sarafina!* (1992). She also featured in *The Cosby Show* (1984).

Makeba was born on 4 March 1932 in Prospect Township, near Johannesburg, South Africa, and died on 10 November 2008 in Italy. Her early film work included a role in the 1959 anti-apartheid documentary *Come Back, Africa*, which contributed to her international recognition.
