## Fi1m on Mohammed Amer

> Mohammed Amer makes the business of getting through a day funny without pretending it is easy. *Mo* gives his conversational warmth a proper home, though his writing sometimes relies too heavily on the pleasure of his company.

In *Mo* (2022), Mohammed Amer makes trying to earn a living funny while keeping the frustration close to the surface. His Mo Najjar is a Palestinian refugee in Houston whose unresolved immigration status limits what he can decide for himself. The jokes grow out of those daily difficulties, so the programme can spend time on work and family without inventing a fresh calamity for every scene. We were moved by the strain Amer keeps beneath the humour, even when he is making Mo agreeable company.

The route to that programme runs through stand-up, including *Mo Amer: The Vagabond* (2018), and his recurring role in *Ramy* (2019). His stage work draws on refugee experience and uses a conversational delivery; the connection with *Mo* is plain without requiring us to treat the fiction as a record of his life. With *Mo*, he became creator, writer and lead, as well as directing episodes. The longer format gives that easy manner time to work and lets the family matter.

Writing alongside Ramy Youssef, Sophia Lear and Luvh Rakhe, Amer gives the first series room to linger between developments in Mo's case. The humour rarely sounds attached afterwards, and much of the pleasure comes from spending time with him when nothing decisive is happening. Sometimes that is asked to carry too much. We occasionally wanted a firmer story, rather than the assumption that another few minutes with Mo would be enough. Amer's acting keeps those passages watchable, but there are stretches where the writers need to give him more to do.

*Black Adam* (2022), in which he plays Karim, is a noisy, overcrowded superhero film we cannot recommend. That is a judgement on the film, not a dismissal of his supporting performance. Our enthusiasm for Amer rests chiefly on *Mo*, where he has room to develop a character and shares responsibility for the writing that sometimes lets him down. Start with the eight episodes of *Mo*'s first series, and allow it the occasional wandering episode.

## Biography

Mohammed Mustafa Amer, known professionally as Mo Amer, is a Palestinian-American stand-up comedian, actor, writer and director. Born on 24 July 1981 in Kuwait, he moved with his family to Houston, Texas, as a child after fleeing during the Gulf War.

Amer began performing stand-up in his teens and gained recognition as a member of the comedy trio Allah Made Me Funny. He has released Netflix specials including *Mo Amer: The Vagabond* (2018) and *Mo Amer: Mohammed in Texas* (2021). He appeared as Mo in the Hulu series *Ramy* (2019–2022) and played Karim in the film *Black Adam* (2022).

Amer co-created, stars in, writes for and has directed episodes of the Netflix comedy-drama series *Mo* (2022–2025), in which he plays the semi-autobiographical character Mo Najjar, a Palestinian refugee navigating life and the US immigration system in Texas. The series also features him in additional credited roles on the production.
