She trained as a concert pianist before beginning her professional stage career in the 1920s and appearing in films from 1948. Her film roles include Alice Fisher in *Billy Liar* (1963), Mrs. Pearce in *My Fair Lady* (1964), Aunt Annie in *The Collector* (1965), the Matron in *If....* (1968) and the aunt in *Stevie* (1978). On stage she appeared in David Storey's *Home* (1970) at the Royal Court Theatre and on Broadway, for which she received a Tony Award nomination, and in a 1975 West End revival of *Harvey* with James Stewart. She played Nanny Hawkins in the 1981 television adaptation of *Brideshead Revisited*. Washbourne was married to actor Basil Dignam from 1940 until his death in 1979.
