He appeared in more than 150 films and television episodes, often cast as a lawman or antagonist in westerns of the 1950s and 1960s. He had a recurring role as Marshal Frank Tallman in the series *Man Without a Gun* (1957–1959) and played Sergeant Ben Landro in *Perry Mason* and Sheriff Fred Madden in *The Big Valley*. Mills appeared in supporting roles in Alfred Hitchcock's *Psycho* (1960) and *Torn Curtain* (1966), and as Al Schwartz, District Attorney's Assistant, in Orson Welles's *Touch of Evil* (1958).
