## Fi1m on Morten Tyldum

> Morten Tyldum makes complicated situations easy to follow and gives actors room to hold our attention. We recommend his straightforward suspense, with reservations about the tidy explanations of Alan Turing in *The Imitation Game*.

In *The Imitation Game* (2014), Benedict Cumberbatch makes a man concentrating worth watching. We were absorbed by the code-breaking because Tyldum keeps the technical problem intelligible and Cumberbatch gives us a reason to care about the effort. That is Tyldum’s strongest claim on an evening: he makes potentially forbidding material accessible without losing the suspense. The performance matters as much as the puzzle, and he gives both enough attention to make a conventional wartime drama worth seeing.

His feature debut, the comedy *Buddy* (2003), came before the thriller *Headhunters* (2011), which brought him international attention. The mixture of suspense and humour in *Headhunters* suggests a less decorous filmmaker than the wartime drama might lead us to expect. *The Imitation Game* was his English-language debut, with the science fiction of *Passengers* (2016) following it. Across those changes of genre, outsiders and people with concealed aspects of their identity recur.

Clarity becomes a limitation when Tyldum applies it to character. *The Imitation Game* moves capably between periods, but Graham Moore’s screenplay makes Alan Turing too easily explicable. We can follow the technical work; we are too often told how to understand the man doing it. The care over practical sets and atmospheric lighting helps establish the period, without making those explanations any less tidy. Cumberbatch keeps the drama involving, but our recommendation rests on his performance and the code-breaking rather than on the depth of the portrait.

Television has since given Tyldum more opportunities to establish settings: he directed the first three episodes of *Silo* (2023) and helped set its visual approach. His involvement in *Cape Fear* (2026) is harder to assess separately, with nine directors across ten episodes. Our reservations there concern the stretching of a short novel, despite the strength of Javier Bardem and Amy Adams. With so many directors involved, we would not pin the series’ slackness on him alone. Start with *The Imitation Game*, but keep some scepticism for its account of Turing.
