## Biography

Mortimer Offner (1900–1965) was an American photographer and screenwriter. Born in New York City, he trained at the Clarence White School of Photography after university studies and initially worked as a Broadway portrait photographer before moving into film.

Encouraged by Katharine Hepburn, he relocated to Hollywood in 1932 and turned to screenwriting, contributing to several RKO productions. His credits include the screenplay for *Alice Adams* (1935), co-written with Dorothy Yost and Jane Murfin, as well as *Sylvia Scarlett* (1935). He also served as assistant director on *Little Women* (1933).

Offner wrote ten screenplays, often adaptations of novels. A Communist Party activist, he was blacklisted in the McCarthy era, after which he returned to New York and worked under a pseudonym. He died in New York City in September 1965.
