## Biography

Moss Hart was an American playwright, librettist and theatre director. Born in New York City on 24 October 1904, he began his career in the theatre as an office boy and later worked as a director of amateur groups and summer resorts before achieving his first Broadway success with *Once in a Lifetime* (1930), written with George S. Kaufman.

Hart collaborated with Kaufman on several hit plays, including *You Can't Take It with You* (1936), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and *The Man Who Came to Dinner* (1939). He also wrote the book for the musical *Lady in the Dark* (1941) and directed major productions such as *My Fair Lady* (1956). His screenwriting credits include the original story for *Broadway Melody of 1936* (1935) and the screenplay for *Gentleman's Agreement* (1947), for which he received an Academy Award nomination.

Hart published his autobiography *Act One* in 1959. He died in Palm Springs, California, on 20 December 1961.
