## Biography

Muriel Smith was an American singer and actress. She made her Broadway debut in the original production of *Carmen Jones* in 1943, later reprising the title role, and appeared in other stage musicals including *The Cradle Will Rock* and *Our Lan'*.

From 1949 until the early 1960s she lived and worked in London, performing in West End revues and as Bloody Mary in the London production of *South Pacific* and as Lady Thiang in *The King and I*. She made her operatic debut as Carmen at the Royal Opera House in 1956.

On film she played Aicha in *Moulin Rouge* (1952), also providing the uncredited singing voice for Zsa Zsa Gabor's character, and supplied singing voices for other productions including *The Battle of the River Plate* (1956) and the 1958 film of *South Pacific*. Later in her career she taught voice at Virginia Union University.
