## Fi1m on Naomie Harris

> Naomie Harris makes capable women feel like people with something to lose. We value the conviction she brings to genre films, though supporting parts too often leave us wishing she had been given more to do.

At the dinner table in *Black Bag* (2025), Naomie Harris's Dr Zoe Vaughn is the service's psychiatrist, treating most of the others present. A meal among spies is awkward enough without that arrangement. It is the film's best half hour, with professional authority offering little guarantee of good judgement. Steven Soderbergh's ensemble suits an actor we value for making capable women credible under pressure. The mystery itself is neater than it is gripping, which limits how strongly we can recommend the film.

Danny Boyle's *28 Days Later* (2002) gave her the breakthrough as Selena, and remains our clearest recommendation for her work. We were frightened for Selena and her companions because the quieter scenes between attacks had made us care about them. Alongside Cillian Murphy's uncertain Jim and Brendan Gleeson's warm Frank, her persuasive performance helps hold our attention when the conversations become laboured. Boyle gets the benefit of her physical presence without losing the sense of a person trying to survive. The later bloodshed is overdone, but the cast have already given us a reason to stay.

The subsequent franchise work put her in larger casts: Tia Dalma in *Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest* (2006), then Eve Moneypenny in *Skyfall* (2012). Her more independent Moneypenny is a good fit for the assurance she brings to genre work. The more revealing change comes with *Moonlight* (2016), where she plays Paula, a mother with a drug addiction. She gives Paula a complexity that stops the addiction becoming the whole character.

Our reservation is how often she has to work around somebody else's story. Large ensembles and franchises have accounted for many of her high-profile parts, and even a good film can leave us wishing for more of her. *Black Bag* works well as an ensemble; it would be unfair to ask it to become a different film on her account. We would still welcome more leading parts. Start with Selena, if both of you have the stomach for the bloodshed.
