## Fi1m on Natalie Mendoza

> Natalie Mendoza gives forceful characters enough uncertainty to keep us watching. Her Juno in *The Descent* is physically convincing and troublingly human, a performance that makes a strong case for giving her more substantial screen work.

Juno takes charge in *The Descent* (2005), and Natalie Mendoza makes us hesitate before following her. Her physical conviction matters in a film that makes moving through a cave frightening before the violence begins. She looks capable of meeting the danger, but that competence never settles the question of how far to trust her. We were uneasy watching her because the person who seems equipped to help is also the one we keep trying to read. Mendoza holds that uncertainty without making Juno so remote that we stop caring.

Her film debut was as China Doll in Baz Luhrmann’s *Moulin Rouge* (2001), following work in musical theatre. Our enthusiasm for that film belongs chiefly to Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, and the rapid cutting remains a nuisance. It gives us little reason to make large claims for Mendoza, whereas Juno gave her a character with responsibility and consequences. That breakthrough was followed by Jackie Clunes in *Hotel Babylon* (2006–2008), with stage work remaining a substantial part of her career. Her later appearance in Leos Carax’s *Annette* (2021) brought her back to film musicals.

Marshall gets the strongest work from her among the films we have reviewed, and the other actors help. Shauna Macdonald makes Sarah easy to care about, leaving Mendoza room to be less immediately reassuring. Alex Reid’s Beth helps establish that these women know one another, which makes their unease more involving than a gathering of strangers would be. The writing does not serve everyone equally well: some of the women need sharper characterisation. Mendoza’s achievement is to keep Juno sympathetic through the forcefulness, rather than playing her as an obvious source of trouble.

We would be interested in seeing that authority tested in a quieter drama, with other actors given equally substantial parts. There is enough going on in Juno to suggest Mendoza would not need the physical danger to hold our attention. The next useful role need not send her underground. Start with *The Descent*, provided the brutality is not a barrier.
