## Fi1m on Naveen Andrews

> Naveen Andrews gives forceful men a vulnerability that keeps them interesting. We rate him especially highly in an ensemble, with *Lost* the clearest example of how much he can contribute when the plotting begins to wander.

In *Lost* (2004), Naveen Andrews makes Sayid Jarrah worth watching even when the next answer seems a long way off. He has the physical presence for the character’s violence, but does not let it crowd out his vulnerability. We found Sayid unsettling because Andrews made heroism and violence seem equally possible in the same man. It is the sort of ensemble performance we value, giving us a particular person to follow while leaving us interested in the others.

*The Buddha of Suburbia* (1993) preceded his international breakthrough as Kip Singh in Anthony Minghella’s *The English Patient* (1996). His inward-looking manner suits a film willing to take its time, although we would not defend every minute of the wait. The romance is moving and carefully made, with Kristin Scott Thomas providing the urgency it needs. Andrews is worth attending to within it, without being the principal reason to recommend it. Our reservation remains the pace: sometimes the desert holds our attention more firmly than the lovers.

Across its run from 2004 to 2010, *Lost* gave his strength in ensemble work more room. Its survival story is frightening and its strangers become worth caring about, which makes the wayward plotting easier to tolerate. Andrews contributes through the competing qualities in Sayid, keeping him interesting beyond whatever explanation the series is currently withholding. There are stretches when we want the programme to get on with it, however good the company. His performance is a reason to persist, though it cannot make repeated delays in answering questions any less wearing.

Later roles include Jonas Maliki in the Wachowskis’ science-fiction series *Sense8* (2015) and Sunny Balwani in *The Dropout* (2022), for which Andrews changed his weight and manner. Those parts extend a career often built around outsiders and conflicted men. Start with *Lost* for the sustained example of his strengths, provided waiting for explanations does not spoil an evening.

Naveen Andrews is a British actor. He was born Naveen William Sidney Andrews on 17 January 1969 in London and trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

He made his screen debut in *London Kills Me* (1991) and appeared in the BBC miniseries *The Buddha of Suburbia* (1993). Andrews portrayed Kip Singh in the film *The English Patient* (1996) and Sayid Jarrah in the television series *Lost* (2004–2010). His other film roles include *Mighty Joe Young* (1998), *Rollerball* (2002), *Planet Terror* (2007) and *Diana* (2013).

For *Lost*, Andrews received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations and shared a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding ensemble performance in a drama series.
