He appeared in Broadway productions from 1912 and in films from 1915, making his sound debut in *The Big Noise* (1928). In the 1930s he became known for dour-faced, sarcastic roles, often cigar-chomping, in films including *42nd Street* (1933) as Barry, *Lady for a Day* (1933) as Happy McGuire and *Gold Diggers of 1933* (1933) as Barney Hopkins.
