## Biography

Nelson Gidding was an American screenwriter known for film adaptations. Born in Manhattan on 15 September 1919, he was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard University. During the Second World War he served as a navigator in the US Army Air Forces; his plane was shot down and he spent time as a prisoner of war before escaping.

After the war Gidding published the novel *End Over End* (1946). He began writing for television and moved into feature films, collaborating frequently with director Robert Wise. His credits include the Oscar-nominated screenplay for *I Want to Live!* (1958), *Odds Against Tomorrow* (1959), *The Haunting* (1963), *The Andromeda Strain* (1971) and *The Hindenburg* (1975). He later taught screenwriting at the University of Southern California. Gidding died in Santa Monica on 2 May 2004.
