## Biography

Néstor Almendros Cuyás was a Spanish cinematographer. He was born in Barcelona on 30 October 1930 and died in New York City on 4 March 1992.

Almendros moved to Cuba at the age of 18 and later studied at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. He worked in Cuba before moving to France in the early 1960s, where he became a frequent collaborator of directors Éric Rohmer and François Truffaut. His Hollywood career began with Terrence Malick's *Days of Heaven* (1978), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. He received further Oscar nominations for *Kramer vs. Kramer* (1979), *The Blue Lagoon* (1980) and *Sophie's Choice* (1982). He also won a César Award for *The Last Metro* (1980).
