## Biography

Nicholas Joy (1884–1964) was a British actor of French birth. He trained at RADA and made his stage debut in 1910. He had a long career on Broadway, appearing in original productions of plays including *The Philadelphia Story* (1939), *The Iceman Cometh* (1946) and *Topaze* (1930).

Joy appeared in numerous films from the 1940s onwards. He is credited as Dr. Craigie in *Gentleman's Agreement* (1947), Mr. McCormick in *The Naked City* (1948), Regnault de Chartres in *Joan of Arc* (1948), Amos Strickland in *Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff* (1949) and Mr. Azae in *Desk Set* (1957). He also wrote the original screenplay for *New Wine* (1941). He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
