## Biography

Nicholas T. Proferes is an American cinematographer, editor and writer. He was born on 4 June 1936 in Southampton, New York. He began in documentary filmmaking, contributing to projects including *Monterey Pop* (1968) and *Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment* (1963).

Proferes served as cinematographer and editor on Barbara Loden’s *Wanda* (1970), shot on 16mm with a small crew using available light. He held the same roles, and also produced, on Elia Kazan’s *The Visitors* (1972). Later credits include cinematography on concert films such as *Jimi Plays Monterey* (1986).

Proferes wrote the screenplay for *Handsome Harry* (2009). He is Professor Emeritus at Columbia University and the author of the textbook *Film Directing Fundamentals*.
