## Fi1m on Nick Antosca

> Nick Antosca writes horror out of his own dreams, and when the dream is allowed to run the results are properly unsettling. Handed a famous property and ten hours to fill, as with *Cape Fear*, the nightmare thins to a mood.

There is a figure in *Channel Zero* called the Tooth Child, and Nick Antosca did not invent it at a desk. "I met the Tooth Child in a dream while I was writing for Hannibal. Later I put him in Channel Zero." That is his method in two sentences. He takes what frightened him asleep and asks a camera to find it, and the best of his television has the shape of a bad night: the rooms are ordinary, the rules are not, and nobody explains why.

He began as a novelist, with *Fires* in 2006, and moved into television around 2011, writing with Ned Vizzini on *Teen Wolf*, *Last Resort* and *Believe*. The turn came with the third season of *Hannibal* in 2015, where he co-wrote three episodes including the finale. Our review of that series praised a show that was as handsome as television gets and now and then loved its corpses more than its people, and that appetite for the beautiful dead sits close to Antosca's own. *Channel Zero* followed from 2016 to 2018, four anthology seasons built from creepypasta and his own nightmares, and it is the work people mean when they call him a horror writer.

Since then he has split his time between two kinds of story. There is original nightmare: *Brand New Cherry Flavor* (2021), a revenge horror co-created with Lenore Zion on which he also directed an episode, and *Antlers* (2021), a feature from his own short story. And there is true crime told with a horror writer's instincts: *The Act* (2019), *Candy* (2022), *A Friend of the Family* (2022). The second kind is where he has found his largest audiences, and the trick in each is the same. The house is real, the people are real, and the dread is the dread of a haunted house film.

What does not work is length. Even admirers of *Channel Zero* found it uneven, and *Cape Fear* (2026), which he created and wrote, is the problem at scale. Javier Bardem gives Cady a courtesy that curdles, Amy Adams matches him scene for scene, and around them a short, mean novel has been stretched across ten episodes and nine directors, with Bernard Herrmann's old strings doing the work the script has run out of. We watched it admiring the two leads and quietly resenting the hours between their scenes, because a nightmare that keeps going is not a longer nightmare, it is a wait.

His best form is the short one: the novella, the anthology season, a single episode of somebody else's show. Give him six hours and a monster nobody has seen before and he is worth your evening. Give him ten and a property everyone has already seen twice, and the dream wears off before the end.
