## Biography

Nick Dear is an English playwright and screenwriter. Born in Portsmouth in 1955, he graduated from the University of Essex in 1977 with a degree in Comparative European Literature. He began his career writing for BBC Radio and the stage before achieving recognition with his 1986 play *The Art of Success* for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Dear is known for his screen adaptations, including the BAFTA-winning *Persuasion* (1995) and six episodes of the ITV series *Agatha Christie's Poirot* (2004–2013). His stage adaptation of *Frankenstein*, directed by Danny Boyle for the National Theatre in 2011, was broadcast as *National Theatre Live: Frankenstein*. Other credits include *Byron* (2003), *Eroica* (2003) and a story contribution to *Lewis* (2007).
