## Fi1m on Nick Frost

> Nick Frost makes foolish people convincing, and his timing can improve a scene without making a fuss. We rate his comic directness highly, though the familiar best-friend casting can leave him too little to do.

In *Spaced* (1999), Nick Frost’s Mike Watt gives the comedy something solid to work against. His directness holds our attention without requiring us to recognise a film reference, which matters when Edgar Wright gets carried away with them. Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes make the programme affectionate as well as funny. Frost helps by treating Mike as someone worth taking seriously, even when the comedy around him is busy showing what it knows. We rate that plainness highly.

The partnership with Pegg and Wright carried into *Shaun of the Dead* (2004), his first major film role, as Ed. The buddy dynamic in *Hot Fuzz* (2007) made particular use of his rapport with Pegg. Co-writing *Paul* (2011) with Pegg widened Frost’s contribution beyond performing. *The World’s End* (2013) completed the Cornetto trilogy with Pegg and Wright, establishing a lasting association with comedy that takes its genre seriously.

*How to Train Your Dragon* (2025) shows how much he can contribute even when the film gives us little reason to prefer it to the original. Dean DeBlois’s remake is longer and slower than his animated version, though the flying still works. Frost’s Gobber has detachable hands, stories about losing the original, and the film’s best comic timing. We laughed at those stories; the detachable replacements are an easy gag, but Frost knows how to make the telling count. He provides welcome relief in a film whose long middle stretch needs more help than one supporting actor can supply.

Physical comedy is part of his work, but the believable person underneath it matters just as much. The risk with casting him as another loyal, laddish companion is that both actor and audience know the job too well before the scene has begun. We would welcome more parts that ask something unfamiliar of him, while keeping the directness that makes him such useful company. For a starting point, choose *Spaced*: there is plenty to enjoy in Mike even when a film reference passes us by.
