## Fi1m on Nicola Coughlan

> Nicola Coughlan's speciality is the small, tidy woman who has seen the disaster coming and says so, out loud, at speed. She is at her best with four other people talking over her, which is not a small talent.

Clare Devlin is the one who says no. In *Derry Girls* (2018) the others are already halfway out of the window when she starts listing the reasons this will end in expulsion, and she is generally right, and she generally goes anyway. Coughlan plays the panic as something Clare cannot help, a conscience that runs faster than her legs. She is the first to lose her nerve and the first to own up, and in a gang of five that made her the one we watched for, because a scene had not properly started until Clare had objected to it.

The career started early and then stalled. There was voice work and small parts from the age of nine, then a degree at NUI Galway, drama training in England, and a long stretch of part-time jobs, one of them at an optician's, while nothing came. A stage part in *Jess and Joe Forever* in 2016 got her an agent, and *Derry Girls* followed two years later, running to 2022. Alongside it came Hannah Dalton in *Harlots* (2018), and then Penelope Featherington in *Bridgerton* from 2020, a supporting part that grew until the third series was built around her. Since then there has been a cameo in Greta Gerwig's *Barbie* (2023), a National Theatre debut in *The Playboy of the Western World* in 2025, and Silky in *The Magic Faraway Tree* (2026).

The gift is timing, and the timing is a group skill. Coughlan is funniest when she is being talked over, when Clare's objection has to squeeze between Michelle's plan and Erin's speech about herself, and she lands it in the half-second she is given. The Derry accent, from a Galway woman, never wobbles. Her Silky is warm and slightly harassed, a fairy who has plainly dealt with children before, and it is a good reading of a part in a film we found too gentle to get going; she knew exactly what sort of film she was in and pitched to it. What we cannot yet judge is Coughlan at the centre. *Bridgerton* has put her there, and we have not reviewed it. The parts she keeps being offered are anxious, clever young women under social pressure, which is a type she does better than most, and a type all the same.

We will admit that Clare got to us. Somewhere in the run we stopped laughing at her and started worrying with her, which is a strange thing for a sitcom to manage and almost entirely Coughlan's doing: the fear is played straight, and the comedy is what happens around it. That is the thing to look for in whatever she takes on next. Give her a room full of people who are wrong and she will be the funniest one in it. Give her a room where she is the calm one, and we will find out how much of the act was the panic.
