## Fi1m on Noah Emmerich

> Noah Emmerich makes friendship feel dependable enough that doubt can hurt. We rate him for the warmth he brings to supporting parts, though the steady supply of authority figures has narrowed the opportunities.

In *The Truman Show* (1998), Noah Emmerich gives Marlon enough warmth that Truman has reason to trust him. The friendship feels ordinary, which is what the film needs. If Marlon looked suspect from the start, there would be little hurt in watching Jim Carrey’s Truman begin to question the people around him. Emmerich makes that uncertainty matter without pulling attention away from Carrey.

Peter Weir gives the awkwardness time to register, and Emmerich and Laura Linney, as Meryl, make the relationships seem affectionate enough to sustain it. We felt uncomfortable when the sales pitches took the place of conversation, because Truman was expecting affection. Emmerich understands how much this comedy needs us to believe in its people. His warmth gives the awkward exchanges a cost that a performance concerned only with getting laughs would struggle to supply.

That dependable quality became both an asset and a limit. After a major starring part in *Beautiful Girls* (1996), his career settled into supporting film work and television guest appearances through the 2000s. Colonel Nelec in *Super 8* (2011) belongs to a recurring run of agents, officers and deputies. These parts suit his ability to give authoritative figures emotional complications. We would have liked casting directors to notice the comic possibilities more often.

*The Americans* (2013–2018) gave him the longer attention that supporting film parts rarely allow. As FBI agent Stan Beeman, he could develop a character’s contradictions over a sustained run. The part became his long-form breakthrough, but the strengths were familiar: grounded acting, emotional complication and an ability to work within an ensemble. We value that continuity; he did not need to become a different sort of actor to justify the extra time.

Start with *The Truman Show* for a useful demonstration of how much a supporting performance can decide. Carrey supplies the vulnerability, but Emmerich helps establish why Truman would have trusted the people around him in the first place. We would welcome a casting director who remembered that he can be funny.
