## Fi1m on Noah Hawley

> Noah Hawley borrows other people's worlds, the Coens' snow and Ridley Scott's monsters, and builds patient, frightening stories of his own inside them. His best seasons are excellent; he would be better still if he trusted his pictures and stopped explaining them.

Somewhere in every Noah Hawley season, a character stops what they are doing and tells a story. A wolf, a man who could not stop, a lesson with a moral. The plot waits. In *Fargo* (2014) it works about once a season; by *Alien: Earth* (2025) the parable has grown into a conversation across a table in which two people define what a person is. It is the habit of a novelist who came to television with things to say, and it is the one we would take from him if we could.

He arrived by the novel and a writing job on *Bones*, then two series that did not last. Then, in 2014, the idea that sounded like a cash-in: a television *Fargo* with none of the Coens' people in it. He kept the snow, the accents and the card claiming it was all true, and made five separate crime stories over nine years. Three are excellent, one is a slog, and the whole is far better than the idea deserved. He has done the same trick since with Marvel's *Legion* (2017) and with Ridley Scott's monsters. His own account of the method is to ask what the show would be with the monsters taken out, and it is the right question.

What he is good at is the small, dreadful thing looked at closely. In *Alien: Earth* he keeps the famous creature in reserve and gives the screen to new specimens, one small enough to hold in a hand. What it does once inside a body made us look away, which we do not often do, and it was not the blood. It was the scientists watching through glass as if this were routine, and the sound design telling us it was not. Dana Gonzales shoots and directs for him there, low light and faces lit from the side, and Jeff Russo, his composer across three projects, knows when to go low. His crime stories are patient and funny before they are frightening, and they take decent people seriously, which is rarer than it sounds.

What he is less good at is stopping. *Legion* pushed its picture-making so far that by its second season it was fairly accused of losing the story under the pictures. *Lucy in the Sky* (2019), his one feature, an astronaut coming apart after a return to Earth, was poorly received and we have not reviewed it. And in the middle of *Alien: Earth* he sits people down to talk about machines that might be people and people who behave like machines, and we were restless until a creature did something and rescued him. He has things to say about who owns a body, and he keeps saying them after the pictures have already made the point.

Start with the first season of *Fargo*, then *Alien: Earth*. When somebody sits down to tell a story about a wolf, put the kettle on. The good part is coming back.
