## Biography

Norman Reilly Raine (23 June 1894 – 19 July 1971) was an American screenwriter, playwright and author. He created the fictional character Tugboat Annie in a series of stories published in the Saturday Evening Post and wrote the screenplay for the 1933 film adaptation starring Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery.

Raine was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He began his career as a reporter in 1912 and served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War, rising to the rank of captain in the Royal Air Force. After the war he worked as a journalist before moving into screenwriting.

In Hollywood he contributed to several Warner Bros. films, including *The Life of Emile Zola* (1937), for which he shared the Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay. Other credits include *The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938), *Each Dawn I Die* (1939) and *The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex* (1939).
