## Biography

Nunnally Johnson was an American screenwriter, producer and director. He wrote the screenplay for the 1934 film *The House of Rothschild* and contributed to more than fifty films between 1927 and 1967.

Born in Columbus, Georgia, Johnson began his career as a journalist and short-story writer before moving to Hollywood in the early 1930s. He was employed full-time by 20th Century-Fox from 1935 and later produced films and co-founded International Pictures. In the 1950s he also directed several features.

Among his best-known screenplays are *The Grapes of Wrath* (1940), for which he received an Academy Award nomination, *The Woman in the Window* (1944), *How to Marry a Millionaire* (1953) and *The Dirty Dozen* (1967). He died in Hollywood in 1977.
