## Fi1m on Olga Kurylenko

> Olga Kurylenko brings physical assurance to action films, but too many parts stop there. We respect her moves into drama and comedy; the frustration is how often the writing gives her less to do than she needs.

In *Seven Psychopaths* (2012), Olga Kurylenko's Angela gets little to do while the screenplay finds plenty of time to comment on the habits of violent films. We were irritated by that shortage, because Martin McDonagh recognises the thin writing of women in the genre and still gives Angela and Abbie Cornish's Kaya thin parts. Kurylenko cannot solve that with presence or effort. This is a funny, worthwhile film, kept lively by Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell, but her part is a useful warning against confusing an interesting director with an interesting role.

The action work made her name: *Hitman* (2007) came before Camille Montes in *Quantum of Solace* (2008). Yet the career did not simply settle into more of the same, and the alternatives matter when judging what she is trying to do. Terrence Malick's *To the Wonder* (2012), in which she plays Marina, put her in a character-led drama; *The Death of Stalin* (2017) brought ensemble satire. Those choices suggest an actor looking for different demands, rather than assuming that being asked back for another fight is sufficient.

Her physical preparation is an asset: she learns choreography quickly, and her roles repeatedly call for resilience and combat. That makes the physically demanding, masked role in *Black Widow* (2021) an understandable piece of casting, though its limited dialogue gives her fewer ways to develop the character. The preparation deserves credit, but a restricted part does not become richer simply because it is difficult to perform.

In *Thunderbolts** (2025), she plays Antonia Dreykov in a film carried by Florence Pugh. We recommend it to an action-film audience, with reservations about the dawdling first act and ordinary fights. Pugh's contribution is a reminder that these films can make room for an actor to do more than fight. For Kurylenko's next substantial part, we would welcome a screenplay that gives her as much attention as McDonagh gives his commentary on the genre.

## Biography

Olga Kurylenko is a Ukrainian-born French actress and former model. She began her career in modelling in Paris before transitioning to acting, making her film debut in *The Ring Finger* (2005).

She rose to international prominence playing the Bond girl Camille Montes in *Quantum of Solace* (2008). Subsequent roles include *Oblivion* (2013) and *Extraction 2* (2023). In the Marvel Cinematic Universe she portrayed Antonia Dreykov, also known as Taskmaster, in *Black Widow* (2021) and *Thunderbolts** (2025).
