## Biography

Oliver H. P. Garrett was an American screenwriter, film director and former newspaperman. Born on 6 May 1894 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he worked for newspapers in Boston and New York before moving to Hollywood in 1927.

He wrote screenplays for numerous films, including *Night Nurse* (1931), *A Farewell to Arms* (1932, with Benjamin Glazer), *Manhattan Melodrama* (1934), *The Hurricane* (1937), *Dead Reckoning* (1946) and *Duel in the Sun* (1946). He also contributed to the final script of *Gone with the Wind* (1939) and directed *Careful, Soft Shoulders* (1942). Garrett was a founding member and two-term vice-president of the Screen Writers Guild.

He died on 22 February 1952 in New York City.
