## Fi1m on Oliver Platt

> Oliver Platt gives overconfident men enough wit and vulnerability to make their company welcome. We value him most in ensembles, where his imposing presence and sympathy for difficult people make a supporting part worth watching closely.

Oliver Platt's overconfident men tend to look as though they expect to be listened to. His size and booming voice establish that expectation; his expressive face lets in enough uncertainty to make them bearable. We value the sympathy he finds for people who could easily become comic nuisances. His 1990s supporting work includes Harry Rex Vonner, the shifty lawyer in *A Time to Kill* (1996), and Dennis Murphy, the campaign manager in *Bulworth* (1998).

In *Frost/Nixon* (2008), he plays Bob Zelnick within Ron Howard's persuasive ensemble. We felt tense watching the interviews because Howard gives the exchanges the pressure of a closely fought match. Frank Langella's uncomfortably sympathetic Nixon remains the chief attraction, but Platt adds humanity to the supporting company. The film's weakness is that it organises the encounter too neatly around winning and losing. Even with that reservation, this is a good place to see how much Platt contributes when the largest performance belongs to somebody else.

Television has given him longer-running roles, from Dr Daniel Charles, the hospital psychiatrist in *Chicago Med* (2015), to Uncle Jimmy 'Cicero' Kalinowski in *The Bear* (2022). A family financier is hardly an escape from the professional men he so often plays, but the part makes good use of his imposing presence. Platt's ability to make abrasive people worth watching is well suited to the series' messy, humane drama. We recommend it chiefly for the ensemble, whose credibility makes the strain of restaurant work worth enduring. The relentless kitchen friction can still become exhausting.

The reservation is the casting habit: professional competence and comic pomposity can become a narrow set of expectations. We would like more parts that test those expectations instead of relying on his ability to make another difficult man agreeable. Start with *Frost/Nixon* for the contained evening; choose *The Bear* if a persuasive ensemble is worth some frayed nerves.
