## Biography

Oliver Smith (13 February 1918 – 23 January 1994) was an American scenic designer and production designer. Born in Waupun, Wisconsin, he became one of the leading Broadway set designers of the mid-twentieth century and also worked in film and opera.

He received production design credit on the films *Guys and Dolls* (1955) and *Oklahoma!* (1955), and designed the musical numbers for *The Band Wagon* (1953). Smith designed dozens of Broadway productions, including the original stagings of *My Fair Lady*, *West Side Story*, *Camelot* and *Hello, Dolly!*. He was co-director of the American Ballet Theatre for thirty-five years and won ten Tony Awards for scenic design.
