He trained at the Conservatoire royal de Liège, where he won a first prize after two years of study. Gourmet is closely associated with the Dardenne brothers, appearing in several of their films including *La Promesse* (1996), *Rosetta* (1999) as the boss, *Le Fils* (2002) and *L'Enfant* (2005). He won the Best Actor award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival for his role in *Le Fils*.
