## Fi1m on P. J. Hogan

> P.J. Hogan makes awkward women funny without treating their unhappiness lightly. We value his sympathy and his work with actors, though his writing sometimes explains feelings the performances have already made clear.

Muriel imagines that a wedding will settle the question of her worth, long before she has thought much about marriage. In *Muriel's Wedding* (1994), P.J. Hogan gives that wish enough weight to make the comedy hurt. We were moved by Toni Collette's Muriel because her need to be chosen remains understandable even when her hopes look foolish. Hogan allows us to see her mistakes without inviting us to dismiss her. This is the work we most value in him: taking a socially awkward woman seriously while still finding her funny.

His move to Hollywood with *My Best Friend's Wedding* (1997) kept music close to romantic comedy, using Burt Bacharach songs where *Muriel's Wedding* had used ABBA. *Peter Pan* (2003), a live-action adaptation of J.M. Barrie's story, was a larger change of direction. With *Mental* (2012), he returned to Australian comedy-drama and worked with Collette again. The return makes sense for a director so interested in women who struggle to fit in.

In *Muriel's Wedding*, the ABBA songs make Muriel's imagined escape from her hometown feel happy enough to believe in. Hogan respects her taste, which matters when so much of her life makes her feel inadequate. Composer Peter Best helps the shifts in mood, although his score is less distinctive than the songs. The scenes between Collette and Rachel Griffiths keep us interested through the film's less assured passages, giving Hogan good reason to trust his cast.

The difficulty comes when Hogan pushes for a stronger response than the scene can support. In *Muriel's Wedding*, broad supporting characters make the serious drama feel abrupt, while the script explains damage to Muriel's self-esteem that Collette has already made clear. Those lapses do not undo the care taken over her loneliness, but they can make us impatient with a film we like. Hogan needs to trust the actors when they have already done the work. Start with *Muriel's Wedding*, but do not choose it just to cheer someone up.
