## Biography

Pamela Mary Brown was a British actress. Born in London on 8 July 1917, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her stage debut in 1936 as Juliet at Stratford-upon-Avon. She appeared with the Old Vic company and made her Broadway debut in 1947.

Brown's screen career began in 1942 with *One of Our Aircraft Is Missing*. She became known for roles including Catriona in *I Know Where I'm Going!* (1945), Jane Shore in *Richard III* (1955), Christine in *Lust for Life* (1956), the High Priestess in *Cleopatra* (1963) and again in *A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum* (1966), and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine in *Becket* (1964). She received a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in the television production *Victoria Regina* (1961).

She worked frequently with directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger early in her film career and later lived with Powell until her death in 1975.
