## Fi1m on Pamela Fryman

> Pamela Fryman approaches multicamera comedy as stage work, with rehearsal at its centre. We rate the attention to actors and timing, though even the precision of *Frasier* cannot keep every misunderstanding from wearing out its welcome.

In *Frasier* (1993), Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce know how long to leave a reply hanging. We laughed at their patience: the wait itself becomes part of the joke. Pamela Fryman directed 34 episodes across seasons four to eight, and this kind of ensemble comedy is where her work makes most sense to us. Her rehearsal method draws on staging a play, a sensible foundation for comedy that depends on people listening as well as speaking. It was her stage-directing background that brought her to the series.

Her early primetime work included *Friends* (1994), and James Burrows was a mentor. By *How I Met Your Mother* (2005–2014), she had become the principal director, responsible for 196 of its 208 episodes. Working with creator Craig Thomas, she helped establish the programme’s visual style and sustain it across that long run. We take that consistency seriously: familiar characters still need care long after their introductions.

That does not mean we want every exchange allowed more time. In *Frasier*, some misunderstandings drag on past the last good joke, however well the actors handle them. The writing and the performances of Grammer and Pierce remain our chief reasons for recommending the series. Fryman’s stage-based preparation belongs comfortably here, but patience is only useful while something funny is still happening. A director has to be willing to hurry things along, too.

*How I Met Your Father* (2022) continued that sustained involvement, with Fryman directing 19 episodes and serving as an executive producer. Her work helping casts and creators unfamiliar with multicamera production is a practical extension of the same rehearsal-led approach. The reservation is that she has worked almost entirely within this format; we have little basis for judging her outside it. That need not be a complaint about the work she has chosen to do. For the pleasure of actors waiting just long enough, start with *Frasier*.
