## Biography

Paolo Cavara (4 July 1926 – 7 August 1982) was an Italian film director and screenwriter. He studied architecture at the University of Florence and began his career in the 1950s making documentaries, including work as a pioneer of underwater cinematography. He later served as assistant director on *The Naked Maja* (1958).

Cavara is best known for co-directing and co-writing the 1962 mondo documentary *Mondo Cane* with Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco E. Prosperi. He went on to direct fiction films such as *The Wild Eye* (1967), *The Black Belly of the Tarantula* (1971) and *Plot of Fear* (1976), and contributed the story for *Stay as You Are* (1978). He also worked in television later in his career.
