Born on 1 February 1946 in Paris, he began as a film critic for Cahiers du cinéma in 1969 and later contributed screenplays to numerous films from the mid-1970s onwards. He is credited with the screenplay and dialogue for Jacques Rivette's *La Belle Noiseuse* (1991) and as writer on Raúl Ruiz's *Three Lives and Only One Death* (1996). Bonitzer has also directed films including *Encore* (1996), which received the Prix Jean Vigo, and *Rien sur Robert* (1999). His other writing credits include *My Favorite Season* (1993) and *Gemma Bovery* (2014). He has appeared as an actor in around 30 films since 1967, including Raúl Ruiz's *The Suspended Vocation* (1978).
