## Fi1m on Pat Jackson

> Pat Jackson brought documentary habits to drama: people at work, real locations and a concern for how institutions behave. We value his practical skill, though his later features did less to stretch it.

Patrick McGoohan remains stubborn in *The Prisoner* (1967), while the Village makes even familiar surroundings feel unsafe. We were unsettled by how little comfort those familiar surroundings offered. Pat Jackson directed four episodes, and his interest in institutions had found an unusual home. We rate him as a director who made working environments matter to a story, though the ambition of his early films was not sustained across his later features.

*Western Approaches* (1944) took that interest out to sea, filming largely on location with a non-professional merchant navy cast. The extensive sea shooting in Technicolor was a substantial technical undertaking, and using working seamen gave the drama a direct connection to the life it depicted. After a period in Hollywood, Jackson returned to British features, applying documentary methods to the hospital drama *White Corridors* (1951). He could combine several storylines and emotional pressures without losing the practical detail of the workplace.

The later features did less to develop those methods, and a change of genre was not always a step forward. *What a Carve Up* (1961) placed him in old-dark-house comedy-thriller territory, well away from the sea-going experiment. By the 1960s he was working mainly in television, handling action and psychological material within tight schedules. His experience of combining realistic detail with dramatic incident was well suited to that work.

Jackson's episodes of *The Prisoner* include *A. B. and C.* and *The Schizoid Man*, but the series should not be treated as his alone. McGoohan is its actor and creator, and his stubborn performance gives its mysteries a centre that holds. The programme can become wearing when its solemnity presses too hard, though that does not undo its grip. Start with it for Jackson's television work, then turn to *Western Approaches* for the earlier willingness to try something difficult.

## Biography

Pat Jackson (also credited as Patrick Jackson) was an English film and television director. Born in Eltham, London, on 26 March 1916, he began his career at the GPO Film Unit in 1933 as a messenger boy and worked on the documentary short *Night Mail* (1936) as a production assistant and narrator. He directed several documentaries before the Second World War, including *The Horsey Mail* (1938) and *The First Days* (1939).

Jackson's first feature was the wartime semi-documentary *Western Approaches* (1944), which he wrote, directed, edited and cast with non-professional actors. After the war he directed features such as *White Corridors* (1951) and *What a Carve Up!* (1961). From the 1960s he worked extensively in television, directing episodes of *The Saint* (1962), four episodes of *The Prisoner* (1967), and episodes of *The Professionals* (1977). He died on 3 June 2011.
