## Biography

Patrice Chéreau (2 November 1944 – 7 October 2013) was a French theatre, opera and film director, actor, screenwriter and producer. He began his career in theatre in the 1960s, directing at venues including the Théâtre de Sartrouville and later the Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre, where he staged works by playwrights such as Jean Genet and Bernard-Marie Koltès. He also directed opera productions, including the centenary Ring cycle at the Bayreuth Festival in 1976.

Chéreau directed several films, including *La Reine Margot* (1994), which won the Jury Prize at Cannes, *Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train* (1998) and *Intimacy* (2001), which won the Golden Bear at Berlin. He appeared as an actor in a small number of films, including the role of General Montcalm in Michael Mann’s *The Last of the Mohicans* (1992). He received multiple César Awards and other honours for his work across stage and screen.
