Born in 1970 in Montreal, Quebec, he studied communications at Concordia University, specialising in sound, before beginning his career in music videos and television commercials. He first gained prominence with the 2005 film *C.R.A.Z.Y.*, for which he received Genie and Jutra awards for art direction. Vermette has collaborated frequently with director Denis Villeneuve on films including *Prisoners* (2013), *Enemy* (2013), *Sicario* (2015), *Arrival* (2016), *Dune* (2021) and *Dune: Part Two* (2024).
