## Fi1m on Patrick Stewart

> Patrick Stewart makes authority convincing, then lets us see how badly it can go wrong. We value him most when the measured voice and controlled bearing belong to someone whose judgement we can no longer quite trust.

Patrick Stewart gives a line time to register. The deliberate diction, the pauses and the controlled posture suggest someone accustomed to being listened to. In *I, Claudius* (1976), his Sejanus makes an impression within a crowded company rather than dominating it. Derek Jacobi's Claudius remains the centre of the series. Stewart helps keep the intrigue readable by giving us a distinct person among all those names.

*Star Trek: The Next Generation* (1987–1994) made Captain Jean-Luc Picard the defining role of his screen career. That precise delivery suits a captain, but the more interesting work comes when he has difficulty living up to his own authority. In *Star Trek: First Contact* (1996), director and co-star Jonathan Frakes gives Stewart a conflict complicated by Picard's lingering trauma. The performance makes that past trouble feel present, without making his capacity to lead suddenly disappear.

We were unsettled when the Borg intruded into the Enterprise, because their zombie-like menace made the crew's familiar competence seem inadequate. Stewart matters to that unease: Picard remains persuasive even as his judgement becomes harder to accept. The writing is less convincing when it uses Picard's distress to manufacture further conflict. Stewart supplies understanding that the screenplay has hurried past, though he cannot make its shortcuts disappear.

The later casting as Professor Charles Xavier in *X-Men* (2000) again makes use of that authority. *Logan* (2017) offers a more vulnerable version of Xavier, a useful development for an actor so readily identified with assured leadership. With weaker material, Stewart can push too hard. The broad, hammy performance in *Blunt Talk* (2015) is a reminder that his restraint cannot be taken for granted.

Start with *First Contact* if you want to see him make a familiar leader difficult to trust. Allow for the hurried explanations and a crowded supporting cast; Frakes gives him enough to make both worth tolerating. For Stewart working within an ensemble, choose *I, Claudius*, and forgive the sets.

## Biography

Patrick Stewart is an English actor. He was born on 13 July 1940 in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, where he remained for many years and played numerous leading roles.

His early television work includes the role of Sejanus in the 1976 BBC series *I, Claudius*. He is known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in *Star Trek: The Next Generation* (1987–1994) and Professor Charles Xavier in the *X-Men* film series, beginning with *X-Men* (2000).
