## Fi1m on Patrick Warburton

> Patrick Warburton has one voice, deep, level and faintly baffled, and he has spent thirty years finding out how many characters it will fit. The answer is a great many, and they all sound like him, which is the point.

A policeman in a wheelchair bellows a greeting, and the greeting is so loud and so cheerful that it takes a moment to notice nothing has been said. That is Joe Swanson in *Family Guy* (1999), and it is Patrick Warburton's method in miniature: take a plain line, pitch it half an octave lower than anyone expects, and deliver it as though it mattered a great deal. He does not do accents. He does not change the pitch. He has said as much himself: "Some voice actors are chameleons and some are not; I'm of the latter."

The career divides roughly in two. The first half is live action: modelling and guest spots in the mid-1980s, then David Puddy in *Seinfeld* (1995–1998), the deadpan boyfriend who followed him around for years afterwards and, by most accounts, narrowed what he was offered. He led *The Tick* (2001–2002), which did not last, and later *Rules of Engagement* (2007–2013), which did. The second half is the voice. *Family Guy* began in 1999 and has not stopped; Kronk in *The Emperor's New Groove* (2000) turned the voice into a second career; and in 2025 he turned up as Mayor Winddancer in *Zootopia 2*.

What works is the seriousness. Warburton plays fools and straight men as though they have never suspected they might be either, and the gap between the gravity of the sound and the smallness of the thought is where the laugh is. In *Zootopia 2* he voices the mayor in exactly the tone he voices everything, and we meant that as a compliment then and mean it now: the film is busy and the voice is a fixed point in it. Seth MacFarlane has kept him at the same desk for a quarter of a century, and Barry Sonnenfeld has cast him four times, which suggests directors know what they are buying.

What does not work is anything that asks for a second gear. Joe Swanson has one register and uses it well, and that is the whole of the praise. The best things in *Family Guy* are Stewie and Brian, who were given somewhere to go; Joe was mostly asked to shout. We laughed at the shout more often than we can quite defend, and the laugh was always the sound and never the sentence, which tells you what the writers were leaning on. Across the animation the roles share a timbre and an energy, and after a while you can hear him coming before he speaks.

He has said he never went into acting to do cartoons and is now better known for his voice than for anything else, and he does not sound entirely pleased about it. In 2025 he began touring as a stand-up. We would go, for the voice, though we suspect we already know what it sounds like.
