## Biography

Paul Bernard (20 June 1929 – 25 September 1997) was an English television director and production designer. Born in London, he trained at the Ealing School of Art and worked in repertory and musical theatre before entering television in 1958 as a production designer on series including *The Avengers*.

He completed the BBC's directors' training course in 1964 and went freelance. His directing credits include episodes of *Z-Cars*, *Coronation Street*, *The Tomorrow People* and four episodes of *Virgin of the Secret Service* (1968), on which he also served as supervising producer. For *Doctor Who* he directed the stories *Day of the Daleks* (1972), *The Time Monster* (1972) and *Frontier in Space* (1973). In the mid-1970s he largely left television for a career in fine arts.
