## Biography

Paul Lieberenz was a German cinematographer, director and documentary filmmaker. Born in Berlin on 13 February 1893, he began in the studios of Oskar Messter and UFA before working as a cameraman on expeditions, including Hans Schomburgk’s 1923 film in Liberia and Sven Hedin’s journey through the Gobi desert, released as *Mit Sven Hedin durch Asiens Wüsten* (1929).

He served as one of the cinematographers on Leni Riefenstahl’s *Triumph of the Will* (1935) and made several propaganda films for the Nazi government, among them *Deutsche Kulturarbeit in Kamerun* (1935). With his wife Gerti he ran Lieberenz Film Produktion in Berlin, specialising in Kulturfilme and travel documentaries. Post-war credits include directing *Wir bummeln um die Welt* (1949).

Lieberenz died in Berlin on 31 August 1954.
