## Fi1m on Paul Mercurio

> Paul Mercurio makes a dancer’s confidence believable without demanding our admiration. In *Strictly Ballroom*, his attention to Tara Morice turns a predictable romance into something we care about; that remains the place to start.

Paul Mercurio’s Scott Hastings looks capable of taking on the ballroom establishment in *Strictly Ballroom* (1992), but he does not insist that we applaud him for it. Baz Luhrmann needs that confidence for a romance whose next steps are seldom difficult to guess. Mercurio makes Scott’s determination credible without making Tara Morice’s Fran seem incidental to it. His precision as a dancer matters, but so does the attention he gives his partner: we can believe that this confident man has something to learn from her.

The film was his feature debut as both actor and choreographer, drawing on a professional background in ballet and contemporary dance. Hollywood followed with *Exit to Eden* (1994), then a television lead as Joseph in the miniseries *Joseph* (1995). *Exit to Eden* was poorly received, and *Strictly Ballroom* remains the performance most closely associated with him. His later work combined acting, choreography and television presenting, while acting opportunities became more limited.

We were unexpectedly moved by Mercurio and Morice dancing together, because their attention to each other makes the romance feel possible even when the plot makes it inevitable. Morice gives Fran the uncertainty the pairing needs, suggesting someone still working out what she wants. Scott’s assurance gives her uncertainty something to play against, and the dancing lets us watch them respond to one another. Luhrmann’s theatrical approach suits them because they can make the feelings credible amid the exaggeration.

The reservation is that Mercurio cannot do much about the broad comedy when it starts to shout, or disguise how carefully the courtship has been arranged. He is a persuasive romantic lead in a film that still asks for some tolerance of its plotting. We recommend it for the partnership rather than promise that the jokes will suit everyone. If Luhrmann’s louder moments grate, give Mercurio and Morice another dance before giving up.

## Biography

Paul Joseph Mercurio is an Australian actor, dancer and choreographer. He was born on 31 March 1963 in Swan Hill, Victoria, and began ballet training at the age of nine. He joined the Sydney Dance Company in 1982, becoming a principal dancer and remaining with the company until 1992.

Mercurio made his feature film debut as Scott Hastings in Baz Luhrmann's *Strictly Ballroom* (1992), for which he also contributed choreography; the performance earned him an Australian Film Institute Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. His other screen credits include the lead in the miniseries *Joseph* (1995), *Exit to Eden* (1994) and an uncredited role in *Cosi* (1996). He has worked as a choreographer, appeared as a judge on *Dancing with the Stars*, and has served as a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly since 2022.
