His mother, Rhoda Melrose, had acted in silent films.

Monash began writing for live television anthology series in the late 1940s, including *Studio One*, *Playhouse 90* and *Schlitz Playhouse of Stars*, for which he won a Primetime Emmy in 1958. He wrote the pilot for *The Untouchables* (1959) and created the long-running series *Peyton Place* (1964–1969), serving as its executive producer. His film production credits include *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid* (1969), *Slaughterhouse-Five* (1972), *The Friends of Eddie Coyle* (1973, which he also wrote), *The Front Page* (1974) and *Carrie* (1976). He wrote the screenplays for the television adaptations of *All Quiet on the Western Front* (1979) and *Salem's Lot* (1979). In 2000 he received the Writers Guild of America West's Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for lifetime achievement.
