## Biography

Paul W. Fairman (1909–1977) was an American writer and editor who worked across science fiction, crime and other genres, often under pseudonyms. He began publishing short stories in the late 1940s and served as the founding editor of the magazine *If* in 1952. He later edited *Amazing Stories* and *Fantastic* from 1956 to 1958 before becoming managing editor of *Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine* from 1958 to 1963.

Several of his stories were adapted for the screen. 'Deadly City' (published under the house name Ivar Jorgensen) was filmed as *Target Earth* (1954), and 'The Cosmic Frame' provided the basis for *Invasion of the Saucer Men* (1957). His 1952 story 'Brothers Beyond the Void' was adapted as the 1960 *The Twilight Zone* episode 'People Are Alike All Over'. He also ghost-wrote juvenile novels, including works published under the name Lester del Rey.
