## Fi1m on Penelope Wilton

> Penelope Wilton does less than almost anyone else on screen and makes it count for more. Half a century of decent, disappointed, quietly stubborn Englishwomen, played small enough that you have to lean in, which is the point.

Watch her in *Shaun of the Dead* (2004). Everyone around Barbara is in a state of commotion, and Wilton plays a woman whose chief anxiety is that she might be putting somebody out. She does not reach for the scene. She waits for it to arrive, and when the film needs the danger to hurt rather than amuse, it is her face and Bill Nighy's that carry it. "I'm not a fan of big acting," she has said, and that is the whole method in a sentence.

She began on stage, as Cordelia at Nottingham Playhouse in 1969, and the stage has stayed the place where she is given the most to do: Hester Collyer in *The Deep Blue Sea* (1993), David Hare's *The Secret Rapture* (1988), Shakespeare, Shaw and Pinter along the way. Television found her with *Ever Decreasing Circles* (1984–1989), five years as Ann Bryce, the long-suffering wife opposite Richard Briers. Then a long stretch of doing the same thing so well that few people remarked on it: *Cry Freedom* (1987), and Harriet Jones in *Doctor Who* (2005), a part Russell T Davies wrote for her and kept returning to.

*Downton Abbey* (2010–2015) made her known to people who had never bought a theatre ticket. Isobel is the kind of part she is nearly always handed, the woman with moral authority in a room full of people with more money, and Wilton plays the disapproval as good manners rather than sermon. The programme around her is soap with a good tailor, and it needs someone who can make a point in the time it takes to pass the salt. She followed it into the two films (2019, 2022) and into *After Life* (2019–2022).

We came out of *Shaun of the Dead* more shaken than a zombie comedy had any business leaving us, and it was Wilton and Nighy who did it, by declining to ask for our sympathy while the script got on with the jokes. That restraint is the strength and it is also the reason she is called reliable more often than she is called great. Flashier contemporaries got the leads. She got the wife, the widow, the neighbour, and turned each into someone we watched when we were supposed to be watching someone else.

If you want to see what she can do with a whole evening, you will still have to buy a theatre ticket. On screen, look for her at the edge of the frame, in the scenes that belong to another character. They have a habit of turning out to be hers.
