## Biography

Peter Brachacki was a production designer who worked for BBC Television in the 1960s. Born Kazimierz Piotr Brachacki in Dębieńsko, Poland, in 1926, he moved to the United Kingdom and built a career in television design.

He is best remembered as the first production designer on *Doctor Who* (1963). Brachacki designed the interior of the TARDIS for the opening episode *An Unearthly Child*, shot and broadcast in 1963, as well as the junkyard exterior setting. He worked only on that episode and its re-mount before being replaced by Barry Newbery and never returned to the series.

Brachacki also designed sets for other BBC programmes, including *When the Boat Comes In* (1976–1977), for which he received a British Academy Television Award nomination. He was portrayed by David Annen in the 2013 docudrama *An Adventure in Space and Time*.
