## Fi1m on Peter Cattaneo

> Peter Cattaneo makes warm ensemble comedies about people who need something to do together. We rate his care with actors, especially in *The Full Monty*, though he can be too eager to make hardship bearable.

In *The Full Monty* (1997), ordinary bodies attempt a striptease that requires more confidence than their owners possess. Peter Cattaneo lets the awkwardness last long enough to be funny without inviting us to look down on the men. We laughed, then felt protective of them, because their embarrassment remains recognisable rather than grotesque. That care is what we value most in his work.

*The Full Monty* was his feature debut, followed by the prison-set comedy *Lucky Break* (2001). *Opal Dream* (2006), which he also wrote, took him to an Australian opal-mining community and a story about imagination and family. He went on to direct every episode of the television series *Rev.* (2010–2014). With the choir in *Military Wives* (2019), his return to features, group performance was again central.

The strength of *The Full Monty* is how distinctly the men behave within that group. Simon Beaufoy's screenplay understands the joke used to avoid a difficult conversation, and Cattaneo gives the actors room to make that evasion visible. Robert Carlyle keeps Gaz moving through self-mockery as much as determination; Mark Addy's Dave makes physical embarrassment matter without soliciting pity. Tom Wilkinson's stiff Gerald provides another source of awkwardness, and the three never feel like variations on the same comic turn.

John de Borman's cinematography and Gottlieb's production design keep Sheffield credible without arranging its hardship for us to admire. That grounding makes a difference: the striptease is a plan devised by men who need money, not simply an excuse for comic undressing. Editors Nick Moore and David Freeman move briskly through the exchanges without squeezing a second laugh out of each joke. Anne Dudley's music helps Cattaneo move between the comedy and the hurt feelings, though the determination to keep us comfortable can become a limitation.

The later stretch of *The Full Monty* loses some urgency, and unemployment receives tidier treatment than it deserves. We recommend it warmly, but sometimes wish Cattaneo would leave a little more discomfort unresolved. For whatever comes next, we would happily trade some reassurance for another awkward conversation.
