## Fi1m on Peter Graham Scott

> Peter Graham Scott brought technical ingenuity to live television and pace to action series. We value that practical skill, and his single episode of *The Prisoner* gives us a reason to look further into his work.

In *The Prisoner* (1967), Patrick McGoohan’s stubbornness gives us something to hold on to while the Village makes familiar surroundings feel unsafe. We were unsettled by that loss of reassurance in an apparently familiar place. Scott directed ‘The General’, one episode of the series, and the distinction matters when judging his work. We recommend the programme despite its occasionally wearing solemnity, but neither its grip nor its excesses can fairly be attributed to Scott alone.

His earlier career in editing included *Brighton Rock* (1947); the more revealing evidence of his ingenuity comes from live television. In live, multi-camera dramas, he integrated pre-filmed inserts with studio action, finding ways around the restrictions of the form. *The Last Enemy* (1956) is an example of that resourcefulness. This is the Scott we find most interesting: a director solving the problem of how to show something when the available methods make it difficult.

His 1960s action work, including *Danger Man* and *The Avengers* (1965), put a premium on pace. He also cast Diana Rigg as Emma Peel in *The Avengers*, a useful reminder to consider his casting alongside his handling of action. The producer credits are substantial too: *The Troubleshooters* (1965), followed by the first three series of *The Onedin Line* (1971). Those long-running, character-led programmes relied on strong ensemble casts, giving us more to consider than the solitary directing credit on *The Prisoner* might suggest.

With *Children of the Stones* (1977), which he directed and produced, the emphasis shifted towards atmospheric children’s drama. At HTV he also co-created and produced *Into the Labyrinth* (1981–82). Some later ventures were less successful, including the mini-series *Jenny’s War* (1985), so this should not become a blanket recommendation. Begin with ‘The General’, then try *Children of the Stones* for a production on which he had more responsibility.

## Biography

Peter Graham Scott (27 October 1923 – 5 August 2007) was an English television and film producer, director, editor and screenwriter. He began his career as a film editor, working on *Brighton Rock* (1947), and later directed feature films including *Captain Clegg* (1962), *Bitter Harvest* (1963) and *The Cracksman* (1963).

Scott directed episodes of *The Avengers* (1965–1966) and *Danger Man* (1960–1963), and one episode of *The Prisoner* (1967). As a producer he was responsible for series including *The Troubleshooters* (1965–1968) and the first three series of *The Onedin Line* (1971–1974). He also directed and produced later series such as *Children of the Stones* (1977) and *Into the Labyrinth* (1981–1982).
