## Biography

Peter Hammond (born Peter Charles Hammond Hill) was an English actor and television director. Born in Victoria, central London, on 15 November 1923, he attended Harrow School of Art and began as a scenic artist at Sheffield Repertory Theatre before turning to acting under the stage name Peter Hammond. He appeared in West End productions from the age of 17 and made his film début in *Waterloo Road* (1945), later playing roles in the Huggetts series of films.

Hammond moved into directing in the early 1960s. He directed 19 of the first 26 episodes of *The Avengers* (1961–64), helping establish its distinctive visual style through innovative use of studio space, angles and reflections. He went on to direct episodes of series including *Armchair Theatre*, *The Three Musketeers* (1966), *Sherlock Holmes* (including *The Sign of Four*, 1987), *Tales of the Unexpected* and *Inspector Morse* (1987). His sole feature film as director was *Spring and Port Wine* (1970).

Hammond received a Guild of Television Producers and Directors award (later a BAFTA) in 1965. He was married to actress Maureen Glynne until her death in 2005. He died in London on 12 October 2011.
