## Fi1m on Peter Huyck

> Peter Huyck is a sharp collaborative writer of comedies about people who understand their profession and still make a mess of it. We rate the precision, with a reservation: his Hollywood satire forgives its targets rather readily.

In *The Studio* (2025), the people obstructing a film know enough about cinema to appreciate what they are obstructing. Huyck and his fellow writers make that knowledge useful: each commercial compromise becomes more embarrassing because nobody can plead ignorance. We laughed at the gap between their enthusiasm for films and the difficulty they create for anyone making one. This is sharp ensemble comedy, though its affection for the business sometimes makes it too forgiving.

*The Larry Sanders Show* (1992) and *Frasier* (1993) remain our favourites among his credits, but neither should be treated as his work alone. Huyck wrote for the former in 1998 and the latter in 1998–99. Garry Shandling, Jeffrey Tambor and Rip Torn make the effort of keeping a television star happy painfully funny; Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce give precise dialogue time to land. Those performances matter when assessing a writer whose work depends on an ensemble, and a staff credit cannot tell us which laughs belong to whom.

The later move into senior writing and producing on *Veep* (2012), then co-creation of *White House Plumbers* (2023), suggests no urge to leave difficult workplaces behind. Alex Gregory, his long-term writing and producing partner, co-created the latter with him. Huyck's recurring interest is in insiders whose knowledge does not protect them from looking foolish. We value that attention to competence: a character who understands the job can be more interesting than one who exists only to get it wrong.

*The Studio* brings Gregory and Huyck together with fellow creators Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Frida Perez; Rogen and Goldberg also direct. The tightly performed farce can be exhausting, but our stronger reservation is how readily affection excuses the characters. They love films, so the programme keeps finding reasons to forgive the compromises they make. We would like it to be harder on them, particularly when their enthusiasm has already made the comedy so sharp. Start there for Huyck's work as a co-creator, provided a little Hollywood self-congratulation does not spoil the evening.
